It took a while for Doug to recount everything that had happened since the last time he’d seen Tim alive. No one disturbed them as they sat, not even the staff. Wallace just leaned back with his arms crossed and listened, nodding occasionally. A pained expression came to his face when Doug mentioned the Green Gang, and how Li Sung thought Tim should have left them alone.

“So, now that I’ve told you what I know, tell me why I’m in danger,” Doug said.

“What do you know about the Green Gang?” Wallace asked.

“That they’re the largest drug syndicate in China, and that they have connections in the government that keep them safe from prosecution,” Doug said.

“Any specifics?”

“Their leader, Du something—”

“Du Yuesheng.”

“Yes, Du Yuesheng—I’ve been told he’s a government anti-opium commissioner.”

“That’s correct. Big-eared Du. He’s close to President Chiang Kai-shek. That makes him untouchable. What else do you know about them, specifically?”

“That’s it.”

Wallace laid his hands flat on the table, and took a deep breath. “There is a lot of dirty money flowing around Shanghai, Mr. Bainbridge, and lots of officials are on the Green Gang’s payroll. Your friend Mr. McIntyre came to speak with me about it—the corruption, that is.

“He’d tracked down police arrest records, and noticed that I’d arrested Green Gang members twice—once in 1933, and once in 1934. He knew that was the second most in my precinct, after Detective Inspector Greenlee, who had arrested their gangsters five times. He’d also noticed we arrested Green Gang members a lot less often than other gangs, even though there’s lots more of ‘em. Mr. McIntyre asked to speak with Detective Inspector Greenlee, and I told him the detective inspector had been killed by a bullet to the chest in March of this year.”

Doug felt a stirring inside—excitement or dread, he wasn’t sure. It all sounded like the organized crime mafia in the States during Prohibition. He wondered just how deep Tim had gotten himself.

“When exactly did Tim come to talk to you about all this?”

“Thursday.”

Doug’s eyebrows rose. “Thursday?” Just three days ago?

“That’s right—and he was killed about thirty hours later. I told him the Green Gang was a touchy subject; maybe I should’ve discouraged him more. Was one of their blokes what shot up Detective Inspector Greenlee, ya know. I still think he was targeted specific-like, but the inquest ruled it ‘a normal consequence of a raid on a gambling house and the resultant fire fight.’”

The look on his face implied Wallace didn’t agree.

“I didn’t know Mr. McIntyre’d been killed until you told me last night at the station.”

Doug took a moment to consider this.

“Detective Sergeant, would you mind telling me everything you told Tim?”

Wallace shook his head. “I’d leave it alone if I were you, mate.”

Doug knew he probably should, but something inside him wouldn’t let it go. He owed it to Tim, he supposed; and besides that, it just wouldn’t be right. Someone needed to seek justice.

“Let me ask you this, Detective Sergeant Wallace—what are the odds the detectives
